New Partially Stacked Sensor and Upgraded Processing

33MP Exmor RS CMOS Full-Frame Sensor

The first Sony camera to feature a partially stacked sensor, the a7 V’s 33MP Exmor RS CMOS sensor offers faster readout speeds and reduced rolling shutter compared to the a7 IV. Coupled with a new processor, this sensor also enables a handful of flagship-level benefits, including more advanced subject recognition and tracking, faster continuous shooting performance, and improved image quality with 16 stops of dynamic range. The sensor offers a native ISO range of 100-51200 and the partially stacked design also contributes to a faster 1/16,000-sec top electronic shutter speed.

BIONZ XR2 Processor

Another contributor to the increased speed and overall performance, the new BIONZ XR2 processor incorporates an AI unit for enhanced autofocus, better color accuracy, and greater auto white balance consistency from frame to frame.

The increased processing efficiency also enables blackout-free 30 fps continuous shooting, with full-time AF and AE, as well as 7K-oversampled 4K 60p video recording and high-speed 4K 120p recording using a S35 area.

Pre-Capture & Speed Boost

Along with the key technology delivered by the sensor, the a7 V brings additional features to unlock the camera’s full potential.

Pre-Capture: The a7 V can be configured to begin recording images to the buffer when the shutter button is half-pressed. Users can set this between 0.03-1.0 second. Upon pressing the shutter these images will be saved to the memory card.
Speed Boost: This function can be assigned to Function button, allowing users to instantly switch their usual continuous shooting frame rate to a faster one to make sure their next shot is just right. Photographers will be able to select various frame rates up to 30 fps.

Selectable Raw File Types and Composite RAW Function

The partially stacked sensor and improved processing also permit more flexibility when working with raw files:

Compressed HQ raw, lossless compressed raw, and a new lightweight raw format are available to suit different priorities, ranging from the ultimate image quality and editing flexibility to more efficient files that prioritize saving on storage space.
Extended raw file processing is possible via the Imaging Edge desktop app.

5-Axis Image Stabilization

Upgraded from its predecessor, the in-body image stabilization system has been revised to support up to 7.5 stops of camera shake compensation in the center of the frame and 6.5 stops at the periphery. This 5-axis stabilization system combines a high-performance gyro sensor with an optimized algorithm for more precise shake control and improved communication between the camera body and lens.

Upgraded AF and AI Subject Recognition

The autofocus performance of the a7 V is a key area of improvement over previous generations; borrowing from the flagship camera, the a7 V now sports an AI Processing Unit and refined subject detection and tracking. The phase-detection AF system itself still comprises 759 points, which cover about 94% of the sensor area, and support focusing down to -4 EV. Subject tracking and subject detection is improved, too, specifically how the camera is 30-50% faster to recognize animals and birds compared to the a7 IV.

First seen in the a7R V, a9 III, and the a1 II, the a7 V sports a dedicated AI Processing Unit for refined, responsive, and intelligent subject tracking and detection of humans, animals, birds, insects, cars, trains, and airplanes.
Human pose estimation tracks body and head positions for accurate focus in portraiture and sports settings and Real-time Eye AF performance refines this and prioritizes focus on recognized eyes.

Additionally, human pose estimation can distinguish between multiple people and maintain focus on the targeted subject; even if someone crosses in front, the camera maintains focus on the key person.
Real-time Tracking benefits from AI-based subject recognition for following moving subjects, making it particularly well-suited to sports and action subjects.
Auto Subject Recognition modes no longer necessitate selecting a subject type, letting the camera detect and track the intended subject.
XS and XL focus area spot sizes have been added for more versatility or you can customize AF focus areas to suit uniquely sized or shaped subjects.
Full-time DMF (Direct Manual Focus) enables using the lens’s focus ring for manual focus control at any time, making it easier to switch focus to a different subject even when working with AF.

Making use of the high-resolution sensor and fast processing capabilities, UHD 4K 60p XAVC HS 10-bit recording is possible using the full width of the sensor, offering 7K full pixel readout for impressive sharpness and realism.

The ZV-E10 II has fast-hybrid 759-point phase detection and subject-recognition algorithms for improved subject recognition. Real-time Eye AF can prioritize focusing on human or animal eyes for ensured sharpness when making portraits. When selected, this function is activated by half-pressing the shutter button, and you can further choose to prioritize either the right or left eye. Real-time tracking utilizes AI-based algorithms and automatically recognizes and tracks moving subjects. If Face/Eye Priority AF is on, this tracking method will further track a subject’s eye or face in real-time depending on the status of the moving subject.

4K Video Recording

UHD 4K video recording is possible up to 60p and uses full pixel readout with 5.6K oversampling to yield greater detail with reduced moiré and aliasing. The grip accepts either one or two NP-FZ100 batteries to increase the effective battery life for longer shooting sessions, and the batteries can be charged in the grip while attached to the camera via the body’s USB port. Compared to previous-generation vertical grips, the VG-C5 also has refined circuitry that supports parallel power supply to provide even longer effective operation times and and the remaining battery life for both batteries can be indicated on the camera display.

Color reproduction, especially of skin and nature scenes, has also been dramatically improved. The α7 III also supports 14-bit RAW output14 even during silent shooting/continuous shooting15.

Wider, faster, more steadfast AF performance

An evolved image processing system and α9 camera AF algorithms optimized for the α7 III improve AF speed, precision, and tracking performance. 693 phase-detection AF points and 425 contrast-detection AF points provide high-density wide-area coverage. AF speed up to twice as fast16 and more precise AF tracking performance let you capture and maintain focus on a quickly moving subject in unpredictable motion. The α7 III also autofocuses reliably down to EV-3 brightness17.

Focal-plane phase-detection AF supports A-mount lenses18

Phase-detection AF can operate even when an A-mount lens18 is mounted to the α7 III via an LA-EA3 adaptor. The 693-point focal-plane phase-detection AF system provides wide-area coverage, fast response, and high-performance tracking.

Eye AF now supporting AF-C

Eye AF newly supports AF-C mode with greater precision that dramatically enhances portrait shooting, plus higher AF speed that makes it easier to shoot a portrait of a moving subject, even if the subject looks down and away from the camera or is backlit with face in partial darkness. The α7 III supports Eye AF for A-mount lenses19 mounted via an adaptor.

AF-ON button and multi-selector

The new AF-ON button activates autofocus without any half-press-shutter-button focus sequence, so you can concentrate better on exactly when to release the shutter and capture the moment instantly. A multi-selector lets you shift the point of focus quickly and efficiently. You can select and shift the point of focus intuitively, so you won’t miss great chances to shoot moving subjects.

Comprehensive AF convenience

AF tracking sensitivity when shooting stills is adjustable in five steps for subjects that move outside of the focus area. Autofocus areas and points remain the same or change when switching between horizontal and vertical orientations, depending on the shooting situation. AF area registration allows frequently used focus point settings to be memorized and assigned to custom buttons for fast, convenient recall at a touch whenever needed.

Up to 10fps with AF/AE tracking20

With new shutter charge unit and image processing system refinements, the α7 III can shoot continuously at up to 10fps with AF/AE tracking20 (up to 8fps20 with minimal display lag in live-view continuous shooting mode) for easy, stable shooting of even intensely active subjects. Up to approximately 177 JPEG images (standard) in full resolution, 89 compressed RAW images, or 40 uncompressed RAW images can be captured in one continuous burst21. An electronic shutter allows silent, vibration-free shooting of wildlife and other sensitive situations when even slight noise can mean missing an ideal shot.

Enhanced operability for continuous shooting

Images captured in continuous shooting mode can be displayed as a group. Groups can be deleted or protected in one quick operation. Furthermore, with higher burst capacity and UHS-II media compatibility, the camera significantly streamlines the operation of writing data to memory cards. The Fn button and menu button can be operated to change settings immediately after continuous shooting, while data writing is in progress22.

Anti-flicker shooting23

Flicker from fluorescent and other artificial lighting is automatically detected and shutter action is timed to minimize the flicker’s effect on still images. This suppresses exposure and color anomalies at the top and bottom of images shot at high shutter speeds, as well as exposure and color inconsistency between continuous shots, so you can take images indoors with more confidence.

Clear, natural, realistic 4K movies24

High-resolution full-frame 4K movies24 with full-pixel readout without pixel binning that condenses approximately 2.4 times25 the amount of data required for 4K movies (QFHD: 3840 x 2160) results in minimal moiré and jaggies. Advanced image processing makes it possible to record full-frame 4K movies with outstanding image quality in the mid-to-high ISO range, so you make the most of the 4K movie format’s unique potential in every shot. Super 35 mm can also be selected, instead of full-frame mode, as needed.

Supports a wide range of needs in HDR movie production

Supporting a wide range of HDR movie production needs, the α7 III offers S-Log3 as well as S-Log2 gamma curves, for great flexibility to fine-tune images as desired through color grading operation in post-production [1], and a new HLG (Hybrid Log-Gamma)26 picture profile for instant HDR workflow. However, color grading is not required to enjoy instant playback of high-quality, true-to-life images [2] with no blocked shadows or blown highlights on an HDR (HLG) compatible TV.

Versatile movie recording functions

The α7 III provides a wide array of functions to facilitate workflows of professional videographers, including clean HDMI output, time code / user bits (TC/UB), rec. control, marker display/setting, zebra function, Slow and Quick Motion27, simultaneous proxy movie recording, extraction and separate storage of a still from a movie, and Gamma Display Assist function, among others.

Improved Fast Hybrid AF for movie recording

An efficient combination of focal-plane phase-detection AF and contrast-detection AF accurately locks onto even fast-moving subjects, then tracks them smoothly during movie recording. AF coverage for movies extends across an area almost as wide as the AF coverage area for still images, so once the high-density AF system locks onto a movie subject, the camera continues to track it steadily and tenaciously. Three AF drive speed settings give you freedom to use slow focus effects when shooting movie scenes.

My Menu and new menu interface

My Menu lets you register and arrange up to 30 menu items in order of frequency of use for instant recall, and unused items can be erased, as needed. A custom menu can be created to suit particular shooting needs. The α7 III has primary menus reorganized for easier searching, with group names and page numbers at the top of the displays.

Rating function convenient for on-location sorting

Ratings from 1 to 5 stars can be applied to still images and maintained as the images are imported into PlayMemories Home or the new Imaging Edge software suite from Sony running on a PC. This function and a protect function to prevent accidental image deletion can each be assigned to a custom button (C3 by default for protect). Ratings and protection can be applied via review playback display and continuous groups can be reviewed, protected, and deleted while you’re on location or traveling.

Promptly changeable customization

Camera setups can be registered (up to two in the camera and four on a memory card) for quick access via mode dial. Up to 81 functions can be assigned to 11 custom keys, and even sets of customized functions can be assigned for stills, movies, and playback. Recall Custom Setting During Hold function is convenient for temporary recall of shooting settings assigned to custom buttons while such a button is held.

High-resolution, high-contrast XGA OLED Tru-Finder™

Providing high resolution and contrast, plus the excellent gradation and color reproduction that are advantages of OLED viewfinders, this approximately 2359K-dot XGA OLED Tru-Finder™ faithfully depicts images with clear corner-to-corner visibility. Magnification is 0.78x (approx. 38.5° diagonal FOV). ZEISS T* coating greatly reduces obtrusive lens reflection on the ocular lens. Start-up is approximately 40% faster than with the α7 II when the camera is switched on. Furthermore, view mode can be set to “High” to provide finer and more natural details by taking maximum advantage of the data read from the 24.2 effective megapixel sensor.

Touch screen LCD for easy instant focus operation

A 3.0-type 922K-dot LCD screen offers touch screen operation and bright, clear, finely detailed views even outdoors. Use Touch Focus to focus instantly on a point that you touch on the screen and Touch Pad to drag the focus frame with a fingertip on the LCD as you monitor the shot through the viewfinder. This LCD tilts up by as much as 107°, and down by as much as 41° for flexible, convenient camera holding and shot monitoring.

In-body 5-axis image stabilization with 5.0-stop28 shutter speed advantage

This comprehensive system compensates for five types of camera shake that tend to blur images: pitch/yaw shake when shooting at longer focal lengths; X/Y shake in close-up (including macro) shooting; and roll shake when recording stills at night and movies. It effectively achieves 5.0-stop-faster28 shutter speed, so the α7 III can take full advantage of its high-quality imaging capability and live-view image performance. Furthermore, it functions with A-mount lenses attached via mount adaptor, as well as E-mount lenses.

Location Information Link via Bluetooth29

The camera can be paired with the PlayMemories Mobile app30 installed on a compatible cellphone or tablet device to acquire location data, record it on still images, and correct camera date/time and location settings. PlayMemories Home application can be used on a personal computer to organize imported still images on a map.

Smooth PC tethering via USB 3.1 Gen 1 port

A USB Type-C™31 port supporting fast USB 3.1 Gen 1 facilitates high-speed PC Remote transfer of large RAW data files, so you can quickly review images on a PC and continue shooting without delay. Longer battery life to shoot for more professional lengths

Dual slots with UHS-II compatibility

This camera provides two media slots for SD card (UHS-II-compatible for fast data writing) and SD card/Memory Stick, respectively. Two cards in the slots can be used to simultaneously record or relay record data, separate RAW data from JPEG data, or stills from movies, and copy data from one card to the other. The memory card cover is lockable to prevent it from being opened unintentionally.

Highly durable and operable in tough conditions

The α7 III functions reliably in challenging environments. Its body is fortified by lightweight, high-rigidity magnesium alloy top cover, front cover, and internal frame. The number of lens mount screws has been increased to six for enhanced durability. Major buttons and dials are sealed. Sealing is provided throughout the body to minimize entry of dust and moisture33.

One-touch remote & One-touch sharing

One-touch remote can turn a smartphone or tablet into a viewfinder/remote control. One-touch sharing transfers photos/videos to your device for social network site (SNS) sharing. 61MP Exmor R BSI Sensor

Borrowing the proven high-resolution sensor from the a7R V and a7CR cameras, the RX1R III features the full-frame 61MP Exmor R BSI chip, along with BIONZ XR processing, that achieves incredible resolution, high clarity, low noise, and a wide 15-stop dynamic range. The sensor’s structure promotes impressive image quality, and a copper wiring layer dramatically improves data transmission speed for creating 14-bit, 61MP stills with a native sensitivity range from ISO 100-32000.

BIONZ XR Processing

Matching the sensor is the adept BIONZ XR processor, which offers up to 8x greater processing performance compared to previous generations, which enables faster overall performance, impressive image quality with wide sensitivity and dynamic ranges, and more fluent processing that’s capable of handling a bevy of AI tasks and intelligent AF alongside imaging processes. This processing system also reduces rolling shutter and other motion distortions for clean rendering of moving subjects.

AI Processing Unit and Autofocus

Using dedicated processing, the RX1R III’s autofocus is greatly benefitted by more intelligent subject tracking and recognition capabilities along with the reliable hybrid AF system Alpha cameras are known for. Real-time Recognition AF works with seven different selectable target types:

Human, which tracks body and head positions for accurate portraits. Real-time Eye AF performance has also been improved by 60% thanks to the human pose estimation capabilities.

Animal, Bird, and Animal/Bird modes are now 40% more accurate for tracking and recognizing a variety of animal types. Recognition of these subjects includes dogs, cats, birds and more, with the ability to pinpoint focus on eyes and recognize animal bodies and heads.
Insect recognition offers even finer performance with the ability to detect the head or entire insect subject.
Car/Train and Airplane recognition means the camera can detect the front part of a train, nose of an airplane, or easily detect the entire fast-moving subject.
Real-time Tracking benefits from AI-based subject recognition for following moving subjects, making it particularly well-suited to sports and action subjects. Also, Human pose estimation allows the camera to distinguish between multiple people and maintain focus on the targeted subject; even if someone crosses in front, the camera maintains focus on the key person.

Advanced Fast Hybrid AF

Covering 79% of the full-frame image area, or 100% of the APS-C cropped area, a Fast Hybrid AF system incorporates a dense 693 phase-detection point grid for quick and precise focusing in a variety of lighting conditions with sensitivity down to -4 EV. This focusing system is available for use in all recording modes, to benefit both video and stills applications.
Full-time DMF (Direct Manual Focus) enables using the lens’s focus ring for manual focus control at any time, making it easier to switch focus to a different subject even when working with AF.

Accurate Exposure and Color

Especially accurate metering and white balance is possible thanks to AI-powered algorithms, like Human Pose Estimation, to detect skin areas for more accurately balance exposures when shooting portraits. This AE method is approximately 20% more reliable, even in backlit or direct sunlight situations, or even when the subject is not directly facing the camera. Deep learning technology, along with external visible light and IR sensors, also contributes to more accurate color reproduction and auto white balance processing.

Step Crop Modes

Suiting a high-resolution fixed lens camera, the RX1R III introduces Step Crop modes that simulate the field of view of lenses other than the built-in 35mm lens. By default, changing these modes is set to the C1 button and lets you cycle between 50mm (29MP) and 70mm (15MP) settings to make tighter in-camera compositions.

Creative Looks

Also befitting a fixed lens, carry-everywhere camera, a series of new Creative Look settings have been added to impart a unique aesthetic to frames straight out of the camera. There are now 12 presets total, including the classic filmic FL setting; a new nostalgic FL2 film mode; a contrasty, slicker FL3 slide film-inspired look, and IN is reminiscent of instant film.

ZEISS Sonnar T* 35mm f/2 Lens

Featuring the same legendary lens from its predecessor, the RX1R III sports the classic ZEISS Sonnar T* 35mm f/2 prime lens—a fast wide-angle prime well-suited to everyday shooting needs.

Bright f/2 maximum aperture is ideal for working in a variety of lighting conditions and also offers extensive control over depth of field, for highlighting subjects with selective focus.
Optical design includes a series of aspherical elements to render images with a high degree of sharpness and accuracy.
Nine-blade diaphragm contributes to a smooth bokeh quality.
Dedicated macro position on the lens barrel allows focusing close-up subjects from a 7.9″ to 11.8″ range; when set to normal position, the lens focuses down to 11.8″.
Leaf shutter design enables flash sync at all mechanical shutter speeds up to 1/4000 sec.

EVF and LCD

Another change in design from the previous generation, the RX1R III sheds the pop-up EVF design for a fixed position design, making the finder more reliable and intuitive to use. The EVF is a 0.39″ 2.36m-dot OLED and has a 0.7x magnification.
The rear LCD is a fixed 3.0″ 2.36m-dot panel and its touchscreen design suits easy navigation and Touch Af and Touch Tracking controls.

Creative Looks can be baked into the recorded footage to create a specific mood during recording and minimize the need for editing.
User-created LUTs and presets can be set for accurately monitoring footage or previewing a specific look during shooting and can be applied to the camera’s monitor, EVF, or HDMI output.

LCS-RXL Body Case is a fitted, leather-like case that protects the camera and maintains access to the ports, battery, and card slot while also keeping it at the ready for spontaneous shoots.
TG-2 Thumb Grip enhances grip comfort and provides a more secure feeling for one-handed shooting. It connects to the camera via the Multi Interface shoe and is hinged to flip away if desired.

Wide AF area, super-fast AF speed and steady subject tracking

Densely distributed focus points cover around 84% of the image area, and the Fast Hybrid AF system combines the best of phase-detection AF and contrast-detection AF to achieve a world-leading 0.02-s3 acquisition speed. When subjects are in motion, AF points densely positioned around the subject are activated for accurate tracking.

Fast continuous shooting with AF/AE at up to 11fps

Shoot at up to 11 fps4 with minimal display lag, and 8 fps4 with live view, in bursts of up to 1165 shots in JPEG (Standard) at one time. With your settings clearly previewed in the electronic viewfinder, and the virtually real-time display, it will elevate your action shooting to a whole new level.

Fast continuous shooting with AF/AE at up to 11fps

Silent continuous shooting won’t disturb the peace

When the situation calls for absolute quiet, silent shooting with no shutter noise is possible at up to 8 fps, even in AF-C mode. Used with Real-time Eye AF or with Real-time Tracking it dramatically expands your range of shooting options.

Initiate tracking in an instant

Initiate Real-time Tracking by half-pressing the shutter, or simply select the subject by touch, to start tracking. You can also assign “Tracking On” to a custom key, and press it to start tracking.

AI-based subject tracking

The camera’s tracking systems rely on unique AI-based subject recognition algorithms7. These process spatial information consisting of color, pattern (brightness), and distance (depth) data, as well as tracking the subject’s eye and face, all in real time at high speeds.

Real-time Eye AF for human

Even when your portrait subject is on the move, Real-time Eye AF provides continuous, stable eye detection and tracking to keep your scene in focus. It also works when the subject’s face is partially hidden, backlit, or facing downward.

Real-time Eye AF for animal

The same eye-detection algorithms that make great portraits of people have been adapted to animals as well8, to help you get beautiful pet portraits and wildlife shots.

Right/left eye AF selection by touch

Not only can you prioritize the subject’s left or right eye in settings, you can even do it with a simple touch to the camera’s monitor screen.

Smooth focus transition

Depending on the condition of the subject you’re tracking, the focus area will automatically and seamlessly switch between the subject’s face and eyes.

Real-time Tracking activation with Touch Tracking

With the Touch Tracking function you can simply touch the monitor to initiate Real-time Tracking for either stills or movies.

5-axis optical image stabilization

Pitch and yaw control

Compensate for angular shake, also known as pitch and yaw shake, especially evident when shooting at longer focal lengths.

Horizontal and vertical axes

Compensate for camera shake in the horizontal and vertical directions, most apparent at high magnifications such as macro shooting.

Roll compensation

Compensate for roll, or rotational shake, most obvious in hand-held, long-duration movie shooting.

How optical image stabilization works

The 5-axis in-body optical image stabilization mechanism used on our acclaimed full-frame cameras has been adapted as the stabilization unit for the APS-C sensor on the α6600. Relying on a highly accurate gyro sensor, it detects and compensates for camera shake along five different axes, including angular (pitch and yaw), horizontal, vertical and rotational, for stabilization equivalent to a 5-step10 faster shutter setting.

The 24.2-megapixel11 APS-C image sensor is optimized for highly efficient light collection, a wide sensitivity range and low-noise performance even at high ISO settings. In conjunction with the latest-generation BIONZ X image processing engine, it delivers superb image clarity and outstanding textural reproduction.

Low-noise performance for high ISO sensitivity

Across a wide sensitivity range of ISO 100–32000 (expanded to ISO 50–102400), the α6600 delivers excellent low-noise performance for high-quality images even in dimly lit settings.

Improved color reproduction

Algorithms inherited from our highly regarded full-frame cameras are responsible for the α6600’s faithful color reproduction. Depiction of human skin tones has been significantly improved, as have the vibrant colors of flowers. Jaggies and false colors are also suppressed.

True-to-life 4K HDR (HLG) movie recording

Versatile movie-making capabilities

Full-pixel readout with no pixel binning enables high-resolution 4K movie recording2, while a new HLG (Hybrid Log-Gamma) picture profile supports instant HDR delivery. Sophisticated image stabilization completes the picture.

Keep the focus on your subject

Working together, the camera’s Fast Hybrid AF system, Real-time Tracking and Real-time Eye AF maintain steady and dependable focus on your subject, so you can enjoy the more creative aspects of movie-making.

Interval Shooting to create time-lapse movies

The camera’s capabilities include built-in Interval Shooting12, for time-lapse videos with a selectable shot interval of 1–60 seconds. Resulting images can be combined in high resolution on a PC, and viewed with a simple variable-speed preview function on the camera.

S-Log shooting support

The S-Log3 and S-Log2 Gamma curves feature wide dynamic range (up to 1,300% of Rec. 709) to minimize whiteout and blackout and allow a wider scope for color grading in post-production13.

Slow & Quick Motion recording

You can record movies in slow motion (up to 5x) and quick motion (up to 60x) directly in the camera, or use 120fps Full HD video to create high-quality slow-motion footage in post-production14.

Extend your reach with external touch operations

Convenient touch operations such as Touch Focus and Touch Tracking, that are available on the α6600’s monitor15, can still be accessed even when external monitors are connected to the camera.

The 180°-tiltable display makes self-framing easy for vlogging or challenging shooting angles. Professional audio is also covered with an external mic jack and headphone jack for monitoring. To support longer shooting sessions, the α6600 comes equipped with the same high-capacity battery introduced with many of our full-frame cameras16, while maintaining the camera’s slim form.

Dust- and moisture-resistant magnesium-alloy body

The camera is resistant to dust and moisture17, with a top cover, front cover, internal frame, and rear cover constructed from a lightweight but sturdy magnesium alloy.

Customization features

The camera’s 11 buttons can each be assigned to one of 91 different functions, and functions can also be assigned to the control dial and wheel. My Menu lets you register 30 different menu items.
