Stable GN461 output for a wide range of lighting needs

Because the HVL-F46RM is designed by Sony, it can communicate with α camera bodies to deliver consistent GN46 light output that meets professional lighting needs. Focal lengths from 24mm (15mm with the wide panel) to 105mm2 are supported.

Per-frame P-TTL flash control adapts to changing light

When used with a compatible camera3, high-speed control sequencing in the camera uses pre-flash to control each individual flash4 during continuous bursts, even when tracking fast-moving subjects in scenes where the light changes dramatically.

Up to 1/400 sec. shutter sync with a compatible camera3 for new expression

Used with a compatible camera3 body the HVL-F46RM allows flash sync up to 1/400 sec. This makes it possible to deemphasise the background while using flash to illuminate the main subject, illuminate moving subjects against a bright background, and more.

Stable high-speed continuous flash shooting

With a compatible camera3 the HVL-F46RM can continuously provide flash for up to 60 frames5 in high-speed bursts at up to 10 fps. Missed frames dues to flash sync failure are avoided, providing stable continuous shooting support.

Flash control linked to camera face detection2

With a compatible camera3, white balance is automatically adjusted so that the subject’s face is rendered with natural colour. The HVL-F46RM works with a compatible camera3 face detection to provide ideal lighting for the main subject, even in groups.

Auto white balance accuracy that only original equipment can achieve

Thanks to in-house design, this advanced flash unit transfers colour temperature data to the camera where that data is used to precisely adjust white balance so that colours are rendered naturally in any situation.

Minimal flash trigger time lag6

When using the HVL-F46RM in combination with a compatible camera3, time lag between pressing the shutter button and flash output is significantly reduced7 so that fleeting moments can be captured with confidence.

Selectable flash distribution types

Three selectable flash distribution types are provided: Standard (STD), GN priority (CENTER), and wide-angle priority (EVEN).

Light output optimised for focal length and image size

The flash illumination angle is automatically adjusted to match the focal length of the lens used over a 24-105mm range. Light distribution is also adjusted for optimum illumination with full-frame or APS-C format.

High-speed, slow, and rear-curtain sync

High-speed sync works at all shutter speeds8, and can be used with the aperture wide open to produce beautiful background bokeh for portraits. Slow sync and rear-curtain sync are also supported.

Innovative overheating prevention for longer shooting sessions

The use of heat resistant materials plus an optimised flash algorithm provides higher resistance to overheating that allows continuous shooting for longer periods of time. The HVL-F46RM uses the same algorithms as the flagship HVL-F60RM2, achieving approx. 1.76 x greater overheating resistance than the HVL-F45RM so you can shoot without being interrupted by heat issues.

A metal shoe foot with rugged side frame significantly increases the strength and durability of the Multi Interface Shoe and its electrical contacts.

Fast recycle and dependable high-speed continuous flash

Advanced electronics and construction contribute to fast recycle times and allow continuous flash shooting for extended periods of time. A set of four batteries can provide power for more than 320 flashes with 2.0 second recycle time9.

Flexible bounce angle adjustment

This feature makes it possible to quickly angle the flash head 180 degrees to the left or right, 150 degrees up, or 8 degrees down, for easy bounce angle adjustment to match any subject and shooting environment.

Comprehensive control from compatible cameras

Flash compensation, ratio, and other parameters can be controlled directly from a compatible camera2. A camera custom key can be used to call up the flash display for easy adjustment while looking through the viewfinder.

A dust and moisture resistant design10 contributes to high reliability in outdoor conditions. Shoe sealing achieves even greater dust and moisture resistance with certain a series bodies.

Improved rear-panel Quick Navi display

Pressing the Fn button causes the selected flash mode and other parameters to appear on the display for easy setup in a variety of shooting situations. While the previous HVL-F46RM flash only displayed the Wireless OFF and Memory Recall OFF icons when the Fn button was pressed, these parameters are normally visible on the HVL-F46RM display.

Versatile radio wireless communication

Stable wireless radio communication is ensured at distances up to 30 m/98.4 ft6. Reliable, error-free communication is achieved even around reflectors and obstacles. Slow sync, rear-curtain sync, and multi flash are supported2.

Dot-matrix display and custom keys for efficient operation

The same display tab format as the camera makes operation easy and intuitive. The Quick Navi display provides status info plus direct access to important parameters, with assignable arrow key, control wheel, and custom key input.

Multi/Micro USB for computer connection

Control up to 15 flash and/or receiver units in 5 groups11. The HVL-F46RM can communicate with flash units that do not feature wireless radio communication via the optional FA-WRC1M commander and/or FA-WRR1 receiver.

Compact and connected, the Sony HVL-F28RM External Flash is a sleek and portable flash featuring an impressive guide number of 92′ at ISO 100 and 50mm, along with a built-in 2.4 GHz radio transceiver to allow photographers to quickly create portable lighting setups with complete support for P-TTL / ADI metering. This flash can be set as a commander or a remote that fully supports Sony’s existing radio commanders and receivers, including ratio control, the ability to work with up to 15 flashes in five groups. In terms of its physical design, the HVL-F28RM has a compact, pocketable design well-suited to the a7-series mirrorless bodies and has a 0 to 120° tilting head for flexible bounce control. Additionally, it sports a dust- and moisture-resistant construction along with a durable metal foot.

• Equipped with a 2.4 GHz radio transceiver, the HVL-F28RM is able to operate as either a radio commander or remote as part of Sony’s radio wireless system, including the FA-WRC1M Wireless Radio Commander and FA-WRR1 Wireless Radio Receiver. This system has an operating range of approximately 115′ and does not require line-of-sight. Also, it will support up to 15 flashes in five groups on one of 14 channels. This dramatically downsized11 compact lightweight clip-on flash with guide number (GN) 4512 is best suited to use with the ?7 series. The flash supplies powerful output even for bounce lighting, recycling only takes approx. 2.5 seconds13, and stamina in performance delivers up to approx. 210 bursts13.

Built-in wireless radio control

Use this flash with a compatible camera14, for multi-flash shooting, even under strong sunlight or from relatively distant location thanks to its radio-controlled system. HVL-F45RM can be either wireless commander or receiver. As a commander, HVL-F45RM supports up to 15 units of compatible flashes or receivers in up to 5 groups15, for connecting with remote units at up to 30 meters16. Everything you need to know is right there on the screen and accessible using a few buttons and control wheel, thereby minimising the necessary operations required to adjust settings before you shoot.

Customisable key assignment

Key customisation function allows easy assignment of frequently used features for quick operation. Customisable settings include lighting compensation level and flash output level. Customisable keys are highlighted in red.

Tab-structure menus

You’ll enjoy effortless operation of flash features. Tab-structure menus on the LCD screen are the same as those on the camera body for fast access and intuitive use.

LED light and AF illuminator 17

Cool running and energy efficient, the LED light enables you to create natural lighting and shadows for both movies and stills. Plus, AF illuminator 17 supplies fill light to focus more easily on a subject in dark surroundings.

High-speed sync (HSS)

Take advantage of synced flash with high-speed shutter. Whereas conventional sync shooting required that the shutter speed be the same or slower than the synced flash speed, the aperture would be narrowed, making it difficult to get background bokeh effects. But with high-speed sync (HSS) you can use flash with any shutter speed, even up to the highest shutter speed provided by the camera. This allows you to increase the aperture as needed to create a narrow depth of field that keeps your subject in perfect focus while the background blurs, for beautiful portraits. Wireless high-speed sync is also possible with compatible cameras.

Dust- and moisture-resistant design18

Count on reliable flash even in challenging outdoor conditions with specially designed seals at joints around the durable body to keep out dust and moisture18. This is a particular bonus in outdoor usage where you have no control over various factors including wind and environmental dust.18

Through-the-Lens (TTL) wireless flash

Even when performing wireless flash shooting, flash output can be determined based on accurate measurement of the amount of light through the lens. Since you can freely change position and direction of the flash unit exactly as you want, it’s possible to soften intense shadows and suppress blown highlights when shooting a subject from right in front (of the subject), or add soft shadows that emphasise a sense of depth and presence. Wireless flash ratio control is available.

Advanced Distance Integration (ADI)14

ADI provides automatic metering that is virtually unaffected by the reflectance of subjects or backgrounds, maintaining correct exposure even with overly reflective or overly dark subjects. It pre-flashes the unit to incorporate the reflected light measurement, together with precise distance information from a compatible camera’s lens, to achieve the optimum flash level.

Test flash mode

The test flash mode enables you to check shadows on the subject before taking photos, and also to check the light level using an external flash meter, which is essential for studio photography. The light level of the test flash depends on the light level setting in manual flash (M) mode, and the flash unit fires with a light level of 1/1 in through-the-lens (TTL) mode.

Auto zoom control optimised for image sensor size19

This flash unit automatically selects the appropriate flash coverage for the focal length of the lens on the attached camera within the range from 24mm to 105mm. This function also adjusts the flash zoom to match the camera’s image sensor size, minimising light fall-off at the image periphery. The flash coverage required for cameras using 35mm full-frame and APS-C size image sensors differs substantially, and this intelligent function automatically provides the optimum flash coverage for each.

Auto White Balance Adjustment19

Colour temperature varies according to the environment you’re shooting in, and the colour temperature of a flash should match that of the ambient light to look natural. With this intelligent function, colour temperature information is transferred from the flash unit to the camera for correct white balance setting, to help you capture more natural-looking colour reproduction in flash photography.
